András Benkő: ‘About Hungary, our sweet country…’ Catholic Hosanna songs about Hungarian saints

The koboz,

known as the cobza, is a short necked, similar to the ud of Iraq and Syria and belong to the lute family. This instrument is very old, so there are numerous sculptures and paintings on the walls of some Hungarian’s churches and monasteries from the 16th century. The medieval minstrels played on the instrument.

In Hungary was known the koboz as the Hungarian medieval lute, but this term is also used by the cobsa in Moldavia, Romania too.

The koboz has a harmonious soft tone, tuned to D-A-D-G, G-D-G-C or A-E-A-D. It is generally used to accompany fiddles or pipes.

Koboz is unique in the world

because musicians play the instrument only in the small Csango Hungarian villages of Moldavia, Romania and in Hungary. It mainly used in folk music to accompany violin and flute (sultu).

It can see in the dancehouses of Sültü Band in Budapest, Hungary two times a month too.
